Post Office Defenders Criticize Plans to name FedEx Executive as Trump’s Postmaster
Reports that the Postal Service board will name FedEx official David Steiner as the next postmaster general should be deeply troubling to anyone who cares about protecting USPS from privatization.
“Appointing a senior executive from a USPS competitor would be all but a hostile takeover and a gigantic leap towards privatizing the post office,” said Annie Norman of The Save the Post Office Coalition. “Despite having no authority to do so, Donald Trump is pressuring the postal board to install a private industry competitor at the helm, and it is deeply troubling that the postal board would be willing to steer the ship into an iceberg.”
This marks the second time Donald Trump has overstepped his authority to install a postmaster general. In 2020, Trump and Steven Mnuchin pressured the board to hire Louis DeJoy. The postal board must not allow Donald Trump to yet again trample on their authority by naming a FedEx official as the next postmaster in place of someone with a commitment to public service and experience with carrying out the Postal Service mission.
“Now is the time for the postal board of governors to stand in their authority, stand up to Donald Trump, and do their job to protect our public Postal Service,” Norman said. “We already know Trump is going to fill the board with MAGA loyalist donors and Wall Street tycoons like Anthony Lomandino—we need a postmaster committed to public service, and expanding USPS, not slowly selling it off for profit to his rich friends and sticking us with the bill.”
